Recent projects:

Sept 2009 saw Lindsey heading off to the New England Centre for Circus Arts in Vermont to train with Elsie & Serenity Smith who have devised an extensive strengthening & stretching programme – ‘injury prevention and conditioning for aerialists’.

After spending the last 25 years working as a professional dancer with an extensive working knowledge of ‘healthy body practise’ for dance, it was incredible to discover there was so much I didn’t know or recognise about my body‘s capability as an aerialist. We looked in depth at my particular strengths & weaknesses, areas of inflexibility & overdevelopment and how to work more efficiently - truly exciting stuff.

Having never trained formally as an aerialist and therefore not having the same degree of technically strong foundations aerially that I have as a dancer the opportunity to address this lack of specialist knowledge and to begin formulating general and specific programmes for other practitioners and students was and is invaluable, giving me very clear insight as to how I want to develop this aspect of my own practise and teaching methods.

In Dec 2009 G&L hosted a week long intensive training lab in aerial fabric with internationally renowned artist Fred Deb.

Morning sessions were aimed at professional and advanced practitioners with Fred leading a ‘challenging’ warm up, followed by conditioning, technique & artistic exploration. There were also 2 evening sessions for local adult evening classes and the Brighton Youth Circus. Afternoon sessions were devoted to 1st stage R&D for G&L’s next planned middle scale theatre tour ‘The Wall’ about which there is further information below.

Current works in the pipeline:

G&L currently have an ACE application pending for the creation of a new piece for outdoor and flexible indoor touring called ‘Re-flex’ to be created in Spring 2010 and ready for touring from late May and already have performances planned for Brighton festival, Lakes Alive, Greenwich & Docklands festival & Fusion.

‘Re-flex’ will be choreographed by Lindsey and designed by Steve Edgar (The Dream Engine) and sees the two company’s combine strengths to create a unique and innovative aerial dance event.

Inspired by images of bamboo forests, Asian fishermen, lagoons, the piece will be performed over a shallow pool of water over which 3 performers navigate a series of 8 rigged carbon fibre poles.

Beginning as a contemplative solo the piece builds to an exuberant trio which sees the performers swoop, soar, glide and slice through the space. By creating a flex within the poles the performers are propelled through the space and lifted into seemingly impossible moments of suspension forcing split second timing and sensitive counterbalance between themselves and the structure – or at least that’s the idea!

For anyone wishing to register their interest in supporting, promoting or booking the show or simply for more information regarding ‘Re-flex’ please contact us through ArtsAgenda.

And beyond:

G&L have also begun researching ideas and funding avenues for their next planned middle scale theatre tour ‘The Wall’. Building towards a narrative based work, ‘The Wall’ stems out of research, stories and collected histories of dividing and divisive walls and borders, reflecting true stories of people and communities torn apart by war, belief systems, grief, loss and betrayal.

Performed on and against an imposing 6 by 6 metre wall and fusing Darshan Singh Bhullers’ powerful choreographic style with Gravity & Levity’s expressive aerial dance vocabulary, ‘The Wall’ is a portrayal of our pre occupation with terror but more importantly of what it is to be human.

‘The Wall’ will be in production and then touring in 2011.
