Falling Up A body is suspended
in the action of falling, caught between ideals, impossible dreams
and realities. Inspired in part by Aaron Siskinds photographic series
The Pleasures and Terrors of Levitation, Falling Up is a
collaboration between a performer and a rope winding mechanism;
a continually twisting and tumbling solo for endless corde lisse
where the challenge becomes trying to get back down. Conceived
& performed by: Lindsey Butcher Part-funded by Arts Council England & Creation Studio Award, Circus Space. Falling Up is commissioned by Brighton Festival and by Southern England Touring Agency, the promoter and venue development organisation for the South East of England. Presented in collaboration with Stage Technologies. With huge thanks to Mike Barnett and Mike Sharp without whose enthusiasm and commitment this piece would not have come about. |
The Way I See It Documentary film maker Becky Edmunds take on what captured her imagination whilst shadowing the rehearsal process for the Taking Flight programme of shorts. Film director: Becky Edmunds Part-Funded by ACE and Supported by Made in Brighton Ltd. |
Reinventing The WheelA trio of two dancers and one wheel. A rocking structure whose framework is transformed during the piece to form a large wheel in which the dancers can twist, roll and negotiate a pathway. Propelled within the frame the performers are lifted into seemingly impossible moments of suspension forcing split second timing, sensitive counterbalance and play and a huge amount of trust. Choreographer
and Designer: Michele Weaver Original concept funded by the Circus Space and London Development Agency for a collaborative R & D period by Michele Weaver, Sophy Griffiths and Lindsey Butcher. Made with support from Made in Brighton Ltd. |
WallflowerAn aerial solo for film, made in collaboration with Yael Flexer (Bedlam Dance Company) on a counter-weight harness system - a beautiful, contemplative vertical dance set against a huge red brick wall. Choreographer:
Yael Flexer (Bedlam Dance Co) Commissioned by Made In Brighton Ltd with additional support from Circus Space, London. With thanks to Mitch, The Circus Space, Rosemary Lee and Made in Brighton Ltd. |
From Where Im StandingA view of an average day through tilted spectacles where the forces of gravity conspire to make the easiest task the hardest thing in the world. From where he is standing she is making life difficult for him and from her perspective he couldnt be more useless. Together they need to get the job done even though they can't see eye to eye because he's topsy turvy and she's slightly off balance. Climbing the walls, tripping over themselves, off centered and upside down, their divertingly skewed relationship to perspective makes for a work that re-invents traditional circus skills for dance film. Film director:
Carl Stevenson A collaboration with Company F.Z. Commissioned by South East Dance. With huge thanks to Philip Morgan, Sean Phillips at Brighton Dome and Ed at Open Spaces. |
Why?Why? is an aerial dance duet in two parts on single line harnesses. Why? asks questions about the inevitable. It is driven and fierce in its articulation. Power and strength are juxtaposed with ease and surrender. Choreographer:
Fin Walker Supported by Circus Space and The Royal Opera House, London. Why? was initially conceived as a site specific event in the Floral Hall at the Royal Opera House. Made in conjunction with Walker Dance Park Music, the Associate Company of the ROH2. Funded by Jerwood Circus Award, Arts Council England. Special thanks to: Deborah Bull, Phylidda Ritter, Phillipa Rooke, Claire McCaldin, Martin Adams and all the technical team at the ROH. |
